In Daytona Beach there's something unique for everyone....especially you! Daytona Beach is "The World's Most Famous Beach" with 23 miles of great white sand beaches. The area's fame really began to spread when cars started racing on the beach around the turn of the century. Back then, automotive pioneers like Louis Chevrolet and Henry Ford found that the hard-packed sand of these wide beaches (about 500 FT at low tide) served as a great proving ground for speed and auto racing. The top speed in 1902 was a blazing 57 MPH. The last speed record set on the beach was when Sir Malcolm Campbell powered his "Bluebird" up to 276 MPH. You can still drive on 18 miles of the beach during daylight hours (a bit slower....at 10 MPH) which is accessible from many clearly marked beach ramps. The daily charge of $5 per vehicle (from Feb thru Labor Day....the rest of the year it's free) allows unlimited re-entry for the day. There are now 5 miles set aside for anyone who does not wish to share beach space with vehicles. There are vendors on the beach for your convenience who rent everything from floats to motorbikes and who sell everything from hot-dogs to tee shirts and sunscreen. Remember to swim near one of the strategically located lifeguard towers and remain aware of undertows or rough sea situations. Sailing, surfing and jet-skiing are very popular. Competitions in these ocean sports are held throughout the year. The nearby Halifax river or Intercoastal waterway also provides activities such as powerboat cruising and commercial boat tours. Deep sea fishing charters are available at the Ponce Inlet marinas. From April 15 through October 31, the area beaches host an unusual marine visitor - the sea turtle. These magnificent animals emerge from the surf at night to lay eggs in nest dug into the dry sand and then return to the seas. Two months later, approximately 100 hatchlings emerge from each of these nests and crawl to the ocean. This amazing cycle of Mother Nature is thousands of years old. Local governments have taken several steps to protect these gentle creatures and the fragile dune area. Beach driving and parking are prohibited west of an established dune conservation zone and beachfront lighting at night is limited. The tiny hatchlings can be confused by bright lights and stray west onto busy Highway A1A.
